PENSIONERS PICKET LOCAL BUS FIRM
Posted on Wednesday, September 23 @ 04:42:22 BST by

Transport (23/09/09) Two determined ladies (pictured) from Werrington recently took their plight for a better bus service right to the top, as they enjoyed a journey on the number one bus service, with their local councillor, a senior council officer and Stagecoach’s head of operations for Peterborough:

The reason for this mini bus-tour undertaken by the two residents of the South Werrington and North Gunthorpe ward, who are based in Ainsdale and Birkdale Avenue (Werrington) was to raise the concerns about the standard of the number one bus service and add weight for the need for sheltered and seated us shelters along the village section of Church Street, specifically for people of a pension able age or with physically restrictions.

The journey started at the Werrington Adult Education Centre (Church Street) at 5.30pm, with the five then catching one of the number 1 buses, which is said to be the most lucrative route in the city with some 12-14 buses operating along it each morning.

* Its worth noting that the service, after nine pm is then funded by the City Council as Stagecoach do not deem it proficient enough to maintain, and so the council has been forced to step in and hence service is not of the same standard as in the morning.

Commenting, local Lib Dem ward councillor for the area, Cllr Darren Fower said:

“I’d like to thank Stagecoach and the Council for attending this event. They provided a wealth of knowledge and very much helped out in this case.

“Too often bureaucracy controls attempts to resolve community concerns. I sometimes feel that that stagecoach as a company forget that they benefit financially from local taxpayers, via subsidies from the Town Hall and senior council officers get their wages ad a result of local residents paying for them, so sometimes should come out from their offices a little more and stand face to face with citizens.

“In this particular, I would like to offer my sincere gratitude and appreciation firstly, to the residents for taking the time and having the conviction to raise their concerns, and then to the Council and Stagecoach, who have given us hope that issues will be resolved and we can all move forward to ensure that the bus service for residents in the Werrington area are top notch.”

· It is now hoped that a consultation exercise will now take place with local residents, as part of the plan to see at least one new bus shelter introduced within Werrington Village.
· The two ladies have been given assurances that bus drivers must, at all times ensure that the lowering of buses is undertaken at each stop where needed, rather than waiting for passengers to ask the drivers to do this task.
· Liberal Democrat councillors have already been pressing the local authority to extend the concessionary fares scheme for pensioners.
