LIB DEMS SECURE 140% INCREASE IN WEST WARD BY-ELECTION

(19/12/09) The West Ward FOCUS Team, led by local residents Ginny McDermid, enjoyed the only increase in votes received - amongst any of the leading parties - in the recent West Ward By-Election. The result has been described as “..extremely encouraging..” by leading city Lib Dems:
Historically a Tory safe seat, this years by-election saw the Conservative vote drop drastically by 25% compared to the 2008 results. This drop was matched by the Labour Party who witnessed their vote crash by 26% and even the Green Party candidate endured a 41% drop on their vote!
Building on the previous years result and thanks to some solid support from local residents, keen to secure change for the area, the Liberal Democrat share of the vote flew up by a 140%!
The news has been welcomed by senior Liberal Democrats at the Town Hall. Commenting, Lib Dem group leader, Cllr Darren Fower said:
“The result shows that even in so-called safe seats, the Tory voters are starting to question the sincerity of their candidates and party. Its all very well David Cameron paying lip service to the mass media, as he appears determined to tell voters whatever they want to hear in order to get elected and stay ahead in the polls, but the impact this is having on the grass roots support is clear - Conservative voters are looking elsewhere for help!
“The Liberal Democrats and Ginny McDermid, have shown that limited funds and a bucket load of enthusiasm, we can make an impact. It’s a bit like Henry Cooper fighting Mohammed Ali, we did not win the bout, but we certainly gave them a hit and bloody nose! Most importantly, while the other candidates disappear now the event is over, Ginny will be continuing to help local residents raise their concerns, represent her area and will be back stronger for the next round.”
Additional Points
* Nearly 70% of those entitled to vote in the election did not bother!
* 40% of those who voted did not vote Conservative.
