ORTON CENTRE CART PARK CHARGE - Peterborough Liberal Democrats -

(24/01/10) Members of the Orton FOCUS Team, led by Cllr William Trueman, tell us the owners of the Orton Centre are now looking to introduce the profiteering policy of charging shoppers to park at the centre:

According to local Lib Dem councillor William Trueman, the owners of the Orton Centre are looking into the idea of charging shoppers 50p for 2 hours and £1 for 4 hours.

Local people who are annoyed by this proposal and would like to see this idea shelved have met this with anger.

Liberal Democrat William Trueman, who lives nearby said:

“Since the sale of the Orton Centre to a private body in 2002, Peterborough City Council has passed responsibility to the new landlord and this means the new owner can set car parking tariffs on their own car parks as they see fit.

“However, the charge will put customers off and I fear we may see the collapse of an important shopping centre at an early stage in its revival.

“This is a huge own goal by the car park owners and I hope they see sense and remove the car parking charge or at least allow shoppers to reclaim their car parking charge at the checkout.”
