BBC PRESSURE ENSURES COUNCIL HOLDS PCT TO ACCOUNT
Posted on Tuesday, January 26 @ 20:24:35 GMT by

Council (27/01/10) During a recent interview on the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire breakfast show, Cllr Darren Fower promised to hold Peterborough Primary Care Trust to account, following the recent announcement that the trust was facing a £7m overspend in its budget. At the latest gathering of the Councils Scrutiny Commission for Health Issues, the committee agreed to hold a special meeting to review the budgetary failings:

The proposal put forward by Cllr Darren Fower and supported by the other committee members, came after a presentation by the then Chief Executive of the Care Trust, Angela Bailey, who has since resigned from her post!

According to Darren, the committee were told that PCT director of finance David Bacon, had stepped down from his post, following the massive deficit in the Care Trusts budget……. but where then informed that he was heading a team tasked with creating a Recovery Plan!

Commenting, Cllr Darren Fower told us:

“I just could not believe what we were being told. The chap in charge and therefore responsible, at the very least to some degree, was going to come up with a recovery plan!

“As the committee has a legal responsibility to scrutinise the services and standards of the local Primary Care Trust, I asked if anyone had actually seen or had in their possession a copy of this recovery plan that Angela was talking about no one had?

“The committee’s reputation was on the line and a senior PCT figure turning up and simply saying that we need not worry just was not good enough. At the very least, I hope through this special meeting that we will find out the truth as to what has actually contributed to this large shortfall.”

As yet there is no date for the meeting, although we understand that it will in this instance bit be held in public. However, Darren has promised to report back to us with the findings.
