Lib Dem membership in #Pboro up 50% since end of last year!

I’m very proud to say that Liberal Democrats in Peterborough have seen a surge in new members over the past 8 months, with over 200+ signed up members now in the city! This news comes as the Liberal Democrats have reached their highest ever membership nationally, with over 101,768 members! You can join the Boro Lib Dems for as little as £1 a month! Simply visit: www.libdems.org.uk/Join Did you know …… Over 50,000 members have joined since last year’s EU referendum! Since I joined the Liberal Democrats 17+ years ago, I’ve seen membership grow by 80% in Peterborough. Liberal Democrats are the main challengers in Peterborough, providing a strong and united opposition to the Conservative controlled City[…]

800 fly-tips every month costing more than £200,000

According to information released by Peterborough City Council, “The council clears around 800 fly-tips every month costing more than £200,000 annually; money which could otherwise be spent on vital public services. In June this year the fire service was called to almost 40 deliberate fires involving fly-tipped waste in Peterborough, spending 720 hours in total tackling the fires.” To address this ongoing and ever increasing problem, the same Tories at the Town Hall, who introduced two weekly bin collections, charges at the tip, scrapped community skips and have failed to reduce the amount of waste our city generates ………… have decided to: Run a series of events taking place within[…]

Give £527 pay rise to nurses in Peterborough to address staffing shortages

Liberal Democrats would end years of pay restraint for nurses, teachers and police in Cambridgeshire by lifting the 1% cap on public sector pay and increases wages in line with inflation. Under our plans, around 2,225 teachers working in Peterborough would receive an average pay rise of £894 over the next few years, while the 1,339 police working for Cambridgeshire would see their pay boosted by £471. The plans would also lead to an estimated pay rise of £527 for 1,012 nurses working for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, helping to tackle the shortage of nurses and potential strikes in the coming years. In contrast, the Conservative’s[…]

Policing Matters … and here’s what I’d like to see!

The police I’ve spoken with in Peterborough in recent weeks, tell me that morale is down, they are overstretched and feel under appreciated. After years of reduction in traditional crime, we have seen an increase, particularly in violent crime, since 2015. At the same time, Cambs police are under pressure from reduced funding, with less money available for the community policing we all value. With that in mind, here’s a couple of things I’d like to see ….. Increase community policing. End the 1% cap on police pay rises. Require all frontline officers to wear body cameras on duty. Resource BAME staff associations such as the National Black Police Association[…]

Lib Dems plan to address housing shortage in Peterborough

Unlike some, the Liberal Democrats have a plan to address the housing shortage in Peterborough and build more affordable homes. In 2015, there were 2,790 applicants in Peterborough, on the local housing waiting list, in 2016, this has risen to 3,359 in 2016. A rise of OVER 17% … And I expect this figure to have grown for 2017! In addition, official figures last year showed 588 homes in Peterborough were empty for over six months. So what would Liberal Democrats do? Introduce a legal requirement for smaller housing developments to include affordable homes, make it easier for local authorities and housing associations to borrow money and set up a[…]

1000 local residents have their say!

Cllr Julia Davidson and I recently handed in a petition of around 1000 signatures (the largest petition EVER handed in for this area in 14 years) from concerned parents, who were campaigning for action following news that Funbase on Gunthorpe Road, was due to close. Local parents in Gunthorpe, who used the after school and holidays club, discovered that it was set to close after it was given ‘inadequate’ ratings in an Ofsted inspection. Instead of simply accepting this news, several leading lights took up the campaign, held meetings, door knocked and collected 1000 signatures, calling for action from the City Council, to ensure that the service was maintained. Within[…]

NHS locally could lose 331 EU staff because of Brexit

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust could lose 331 staff from the EU as a result of Theresa May’s extreme version of Brexit. 42% of nurses and over half of all doctors from the EU are considering leaving because of Brexit, according to recent research. This means in our area, an estimated 331 NHS staff are at risk of leaving including 49 doctors and 148 nurses. This would create a bill of hundreds of thousands of £’s to re-hire doctors and nurses from the EU after 2019, due to Theresa May’s plans for a £2000 immigration skills charge for each doctor, nurse and health worker brought in from abroad. The[…]

Lib Dems penny for NHS would raise £56m extra for Cambridgeshire

The Liberal Democrats have a sound and simple policy that would plug funding gaps for the NHS and social care ………..by putting a penny on income tax! The tax would raise an additional £56,000,000 for NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG, with £14,000,000 for Mental Health funding and £6,000,000 for social care in Peterborough, each year! At least 70% of Brits have said they would happily pay an extra 1p in every pound if that money was guaranteed to go to the NHS, an ITV poll found last October (link). Right now in Peterborough, we are told of patients lying on trolleys in hospital corridors, urgent operations being cancelled and the elderly[…]

Lib Dems WOULD invest £29.5m to protect school funding in Peterborough

Under Liberal Democrat plans, £29,574,162 more would be invested in schools and colleges in Peterborough. The funding for Peterborough would reverse cuts to frontline school and college budgets, protect per pupil funding in real terms and ensure no school loses out from changes to funding arrangements. The funding would be spent on protecting the Pupil Premium, introduced by the Liberal Democrats to help the most disadvantaged children – which has seen schools in Peterborough receiving hundreds of thousands of £’s in additional funding already! Children in Peterborough are being taught in overcrowded classes by overworked teachers – but Theresa May doesn’t care. Under the Conservatives, funding per pupil is set to see[…]

New #RhubarbBridge petition launched! Q: Have you signed it?

Campaigners in Peterborough have been forced to set up a new petition on the council’s own website! Why? Well, sadly the Tory controlled City Council said they did not recognise the Change.org petition, that was launched a few weeks ago, and has received OVER 5,000 signatures! The new petition on the council’s website, needs 500 signatures to force a full council debate which would involve all elected councillors. It only takes a second or two, so add YOUR support now by visiting here! Got a Twitter account? Ask your followers to add their NAME to the petition by simply TOUCHING this link: http://ctt.ec/dl0i4 A decision to hand the contract to Skanska[…]
