Local Manifesto Launch – 14th April 2018

Our priorities for Peterborough 1. Give residents a greater say on what happens in their area. The Lib Dems will make decision making more transparent and transfer powers to new Area Committees. The Lib Dems will scrap the cabinet model of decision making, instead opting for a committee based system giving councillors of all parties greater influence in decision making. We will set up area committees which have meaningful budgets and powers to improve their communities. 2. Fight for more resources for our city .In recent years, Conservative Chancellors have cut Peterborough’s grant by 78%. The Lib Dems believe that the fight against these cuts should involve doing more than[…]

Care Quality Commission

Do you know where and how to decide on the care for your loved ones? The Care Quality commission is an independent regulator of health and social care in England.  Which launched a campaign to inform those choosing care for either themselves or loved ones of the role CQC (Care Quality Commission) has on the inspection, regulation and ratings of homes so you can make a more informed decision.  Making sure it’s right for you. Choosing the right care for yourself or loved ones can be stressful and confusing.  So many organisations are offering what seems to be very pleasant and enjoyable care.  But how do you really know?  the[…]

Community Asset – St Georges Hydrotherapy Pool

‘St George’s Community Hydrotherapy Pool is an essential asset to Peterborough’s residents’, Simon Barkham said. I was invited to visit St Georges Hydrotherapy Pool in Park Ward (Dogsthorpe Road) Peterborough.  As soon as you arrive, it’s easy to see how loved and valued this venue is by so many people.  Everyone who was there had only the best of words to say about their experience and about the treatment they’d received by using the facilities and also about the staff too. Thomas Booker showed me around the facility and he too, had only good things to say from the perspective of an employee.  I could see that he and the people[…]

We want Electric, When do we want it? Now!

Sustainability, efficiency, eco-friendly or carbon neutral. You might have seen & heard the rhetoric coming from most major media channels lately.  It’s because we as a nation and a world, need more environmentally friendly methods of fuelling our transport.  Fossil fuels exhale too much Green House Gas (GHG) for our planet to cope with.  And GHGs don’t just come from fuel. CO2, Methane and Nitrous Oxide (NOx) are all potent gases that are slowly engulfing our planet in a blanket.  A blanket that will cause almost irreparable damage.  What’s the solution I hear you ask.  Well, we can all get on our bikes and ride into a nice green,[…]

A housing shortage crisis and yet there are homes left empty in Peterborough.

574 homes across Peterborough classed as long-term empty.  Of which 10 homes have been sitting empty for ten years or more, research by the Liberal Democrats has revealed.    The figures, uncovered through Freedom of Information requests, show that there are 574 homes across Peterborough that have been empty for six months or more. Of these, 137 had been empty for two years or more, 44 for five years or more, and 10 have stood empty for at least ten years. Peterborough City Council  has failed to make effective use of Empty Dwelling Management Orders (EDMO), powers used by local authorities to take over properties that have been empty for at[…]

Wave of Vehicle Crime hits the city

There has been a recent upsurge in opportunist vehicle crime across the city, specifically south of the river. This time of year is the perfect storm of dark nights, cold weather and cars left with valuables in (some even with receipts conveniently in the bags). Police are stepping up patrols in housing estates and are asking residents to report any suspicious activity and any thefts either via the 101 call line or via the www.cambs.police.uk website. In conjunction with the police we have produced a few tips for reducing your risk, please circulate this information to your friends and neighbours. >>DOWNLOAD HERE<<

Peterborough faces relegation!

But we’re not talking football and not just Peterborough: Theresa May struggles with fellow Conservatives to agree how to demote ourselves from the Premier league to the Championship. Jeremy Corbyn is no different, Labour says what it thinks people want to hear, but doesn’t plan to deliver. Labour is split like the Conservatives: Tony Blair said last weekend “stopping Brexit is the key national priority”, “more important than Labour winning the next election”. Peter Mandelson admitted last Sunday that Brexit is not “some natural phenomenon we are consigned to live with” “we must insist on the democratic right to change our minds”. But their problem is that despite support from[…]

Food Glorious Food

The weather is getting colder and the nights are drawing in, Christmas is coming….. Is Christmas-time something everyone looks forward to?  The people who visit the food bank every Thursday at the Hampton CSK Church have mixed views.  The costs of purchasing presents and the additional expensive food stuffs for the festive season are enough to push many families finances over the limit.  Its a time the food bank experiences higher than normal visits, which means we are an essential form of temporary support for those families that are already living week to week. The food bank operates from 19:00 to 21:00 every Thursday where they offer free grocery support[…]

Peterborough set to go vegan….

Is plant-based food the way of the future? A change in dietary habits could prove to be beneficial for you and your neighbour in light of what the BBC uncovered this year.  When Dutch chicken eggs were found to have insecticides within some egg products, like sandwich fillings for example.  These contaminated eggs could cause adverse effects on your kidneys; liver and thyroid glands. Scrambled egg any one?….   This is yet another food scandal not so long after the horse meat affair.  Millions of consumers were misled and inadvertently ate horses rather than the desired beef.  This involved a number of UK Supermarket chains being forced to initiate a[…]

800 fly-tips every month costing more than £200,000

According to information released by Peterborough City Council, “The council clears around 800 fly-tips every month costing more than £200,000 annually; money which could otherwise be spent on vital public services. In June this year the fire service was called to almost 40 deliberate fires involving fly-tipped waste in Peterborough, spending 720 hours in total tackling the fires.” To address this ongoing and ever increasing problem, the same Tories at the Town Hall, who introduced two weekly bin collections, charges at the tip, scrapped community skips and have failed to reduce the amount of waste our city generates ………… have decided to: Run a series of events taking place within[…]
