People are being asked to comment on an application to designate Castor as a neighbourhood area which would enable the local community to play a greater part in planning for the future of the area.
Peterborough City Council has received the application from Castor Parish Council, which is the first stage in putting together a neighbourhood development plan or neighbourhood development order.
It follows earlier applications from Bretton Parish Council, Deeping Gate Parish Council, Glinton Parish Council, Northborough Parish Council and Peakirk Parish Council that were all approved by the city council in 2013.
The Localism Act 2011 created a range of measures to give more power to local communities. This included allowing local communities to guide development within their local area through the production of a neighbourhood plan or neighbourhood development order.
A neighbourhood plan can:
- Establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood,
- Policies on additional new homes and offices being built in the local area and what they should look like
All applications will still have to be considered alongside Peterborough’s Local Plan and the National Planning Policy Framework when the city council is deciding on issues within the neighbourhood area to which it applies.
Anne Keogh, Housing and Strategic Planning Manager for Peterborough City Council, said:
“The neighbourhood area element of the Localism Act allows local residents to have much more say over developments that take place in their community. Once a neighbourhood plan has been approved, the city council is legally bound to give weight to it when deciding planning applications.
“I would encourage people connected with Castor, both residents as well as those who visit or work in the area, to find out more about the application and make any comments ahead of the deadline in August.”
People are able to submit comments on the application until 12noon on Tuesday 12 August 2014.
A copy of the neighbourhood area application is available to view on the notice board at Castor Village Hall, Peterborough Road, Castor, or on the city council’s website!
