New #RhubarbBridge petition launched! Q: Have you signed it?

Campaigners in Peterborough have been forced to set up a new petition on the council’s own website! Why? Well, sadly the Tory controlled City Council said they did not recognise the Change.org petition, that was launched a few weeks ago, and has received OVER 5,000 signatures! The new petition on the council’s website, needs 500 signatures to force a full council debate which would involve all elected councillors. It only takes a second or two, so add YOUR support now by visiting here! Got a Twitter account? Ask your followers to add their NAME to the petition by simply TOUCHING this link: http://ctt.ec/dl0i4 A decision to hand the contract to Skanska[…]

Bonus for buses at Council budget meeting

New bus services could be running in Peterborough as early as October, following a successful budget amendment moved by Lib Dem Councillors on Peterborough City Council, at the latest budget meeting of Full Council. A cross party working group is to be set up to look at areas of the city which don’t have adequate bus services, following a cut in bus subsidy by over 50% by the Tory administration two years ago. If the working group’s recommendations are agreed, up to £75,000 could be allocated from council contingency reserves to pay for the new services. Also in the budget, Lib Dem intervention helped to stop a barmy proposal by[…]

Cross ward concern for planned housing development on #GunthorpeRoad

Lib Dem ward councillor for both Walton and Werrington South, have been contacted about a planning application for several new houses to be built on a small piece of overgrown land at the bottom end of Gunthorpe Road, near the Brookside Methodist Church. It is early days and apparently the site has not yet been assessed by planning officers but Cllr Nick Sandford, has asked for it to be referred to the Planning Committee. This means that the application will be debated in public and determined by councillors, and not planning officers. Nick commented after looking at the plans: “Residents tell me this site is very boggy at certain times[…]

Tory policy vacuum stops powers being passed back to people

A radical decentralisation of power to local communities is one possible answer to Peterborough City Council’s mounting budget crisis, says Lib Dem group leader Cllr Nick Sandford. The Council has to make savings of £22 million on its budget next year. The Government is encouraging Councils to give power back to local communities and give them responsibility for local spending decisions. Parish and community councils are not subject to Government budget capping and can raise money for local services through precepts on the Council tax. After attending a meeting (in private) at the Town Hall to discuss budget savings, Nick said: “The Tory administration says they are going to consult[…]

Watch local Lib Dem group leaders explain why they opposed Cereste “coup” at Council

At the latest Annual Council meeting, an attempt was made by Cllr David Harrington (Indp, Newborough) and leader of the Peterborough Independent Forum (which now includes 3 UKIP councillors) to oust Tory leader Cllr Cereste, through a formal motion to the Council at the town hall. The best bit was, the intention to replace Cllr Cereste with ………… himself! The attempt FAILED with 32 councillors voting against the motion, 14 supporting it and 10 abstained from voting. ALL four Lib Dem city councillors voted against the motion! You can watch what Cllr Nick Sandford, group leader of the Peterborough Liberal Democrats council group, had to say on the matter by[…]

Why are local Lib Dems not backing move to remove Marco?

Newly–Elected Leader of Peterborough Liberal Democrats, Cllr Nick Sandford explains: “A lot has been made of the fact that the Conservatives are no longer in majority control of Peterborough City Council. That needs to be reflected in the governance structures which the Council adopts. As Lib Dems have long argued we need a more consensual approach and one in which decisions are made in public and can be challenged at the time they are made and not weeks later. That necessitates in our view the scrapping of the current Leader and Cabinet model and replacement of it with a system of decision making committees. “The Localism Act passed by the Coalition Government gives us that choice and it is one which[…]

In the @BoroLibDems we do things a little differently… @LibDems

At this time of year, you can get a lot of knocks on your door from party election canvassers. In the Peterborough Liberal Democrats we do things a little differently… we have this radical idea that councillors should keep in touch with people all the year round and not just at election time. We deliver Focus newsletters about once every six weeks and also seek people’s views through residents’ surveys. In recent weeks, there seem to have been two things on the minds of many residents: FIRSTLY: The Tory Brown Bin Tax, which is being introduced in around 30 days’ time and will involve people being forced to pay nearly[…]

Did local LIB DEMS support “massive” pay rises for senior City Council management??? @ClrNickSandford

As reported in the local media, a “…decision to award five-figure salary rises to some of Peterborough City Council’s top earners – as they slash budgets and cut back services – has come under fire.” Speaking to the Telegraph, LIB DEM group Leader on the City Council, Cllr Nick Sandford, said: “I am appalled by this. It sends out completely the wrong message about where the council’s priorities are, as they make cuts to a number of services, and other council employees are only getting a one per cent pay increase.” Listen to Nick Sandford’s interview on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire below! listen to ‘Cllr Nick Sandford talks about Council Officer[…]
