We’d like to congratulate local LIB DEMS who attended this years Liberal Democrat Spring Conference, and especially local councillor, Darren Fower, who collected the award for Best Social Media of the Year – Winner 2014, in York! Darren told us: “I’ve always considered connecting through contemporary modes of communication an essential part of local politics and representation. We were the first political party in Peterborough to create a dedicated website, we were the first political party to have a Facebook page, Twitter account, YouTube channel, Pinterest account, presence on LinkedIn etc. I’ve also developed several successful on-line campaigns and sign up forms that have helped enable hundreds of local people[…]
In a communication from the Director of Governance at Peterborough City Council, elected members have been informed that “….a letter from Councillor Dale McKean tendering his resignation……” has been received. Adding, that the resignation is with immediate effect, leaving local residents of the Eye and Thorney Ward, with only one councillor between now and until the end of May, when the local elections take place. Members have been asked NOT to send him any further Council material, but NO REASON has yet been given for the resignation? One councillor did respond to the message claiming city councillors have been aware of this news for days? For the record, Liberal Democrat City Councillors were not aware, but perhaps there’s a[…]
Leading Liberal Democrat County Councillor, Ian Manning has accused councillors of dividing the council’s upper management and the lowest paid. His attack came after some councillors failed to support his bid to protect the authority’s lowest paid members of staff by making sure their wage scales kept pace with the highest. Cllr Manning, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Resources on Cambridgeshire County Council said the move created a clear division between upper management and those who are the backbone of front line services for residents. “Often those on the lowest wages provide vital council services, so they should not be made to feel undervalued compared to the most senior management,” he[…]
A major new childcare package to help thousands of Peterborough parents with the cost of living and give children the best possible start in life was unveiled by Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg. The new tax-free childcare scheme, announced by the Liberal Democrats last year, will be increased from £1,200 to £2,000 per child and the scheme will be brought forward to Autumn 2015. This means that working parents earning at least £50 per week, will get 20% off the cost of childcare up to a limit of £10,000 for every child under the age of 12. Those working part-time, on maternity leave or starting their own business will also be[…]
Cambridgeshire County Council is in danger of sending a contradictory message to the public by not flying the rainbow flag warns Liberal Democrat Ed Cearns. He says the council has a good record of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people but its failure to fly the flag during LGBT history month in February could be misinterpreted. Cllr Cearns, who represents Cambridge’s Market Ward on the county council said that not flying the flag sends a negative message to young people who are LGBT with the implication that the council does not support them. He is raising a motion at full council on at the end of March 2014[…]
As reported in the Peterborough Telegraph the Conservative controlled City Council has announced plans to “transform” Long Causeway which would see further bike parking facilities lost! Commenting, Liberal Democrat city councillor, and regular cyclist, Darren Fower said: “There appears now to be an almost personal dislike of cyclists by one or two leading figures at the Town Hall when it comes to planning and development of the city centre, which is bordering on the batty! “Obviously, people in Peterborough want to see improvements, as this surely is a natural return for the Council tax they pay? But, at a time when other areas of the city are in desperate need of[…]

Walton Liberal Democrat councillor Asif Shaheed is now part of a council group looking at introducing 20 mph speed limits across Peterborough’s residential areas. Ironically, three days prior to the first meeting, Asif became the victim of a “hit and run” incident when his car was hit while parked outside his house. The guilty driver did not stop and leave his details. “This incident only increases my ambition that the group should be successful in our quest. “There could have been someone crossing the road and the outcome could have been much more serious due to a driver’s lack of attention and care. And to not stop and admit their[…]
