Cereste cycling PR stunt backfires!

A report in the Peterborough Telegraph has shown how a PR stunt does not always resolve an issue! The article reported how Tory Council leader, Marco Cereste, who introduced the cycle ban extension along Bridge Street, despite clear opposition by local people and cycling organisations, had held a discussion on Twitter with a local cyclist about cycling in the city centre and then arranged a “fact-finding” city cycle ride with council officers. But after the stunt, the resident/cyclist himself was reported as saying: “The city is poor for cycling and it takes a lot to change attitudes. I think I got across that the kind of language Cllr Cereste uses is not helpful in[…]

Cllr Lee represents Fletton and Woodston

What do residents of #Fletton and #Woodston think of it?

It looks like another sitting Tory is set to jump ship from the Cereste regime at Peterborough Town Hall? We already know for certain that Tory councillor for Paston, Sue Day, will not be standing and we’ve heard several others are also set to side step the opportunity to “defend their records!” The latest is former Deputy Leader of the Conservative group, Cllr Matthew Lee! Q: How do we know? A: Well despite STILL being a city councillor until May 2015 for the Fletton and Woodston ward, Cllr Lee recently stood for election to the Stamford North seat, but was defeated by the UKIP candidate! Now baring in mind that between now[…]

Experts also say “Don’t ban cycling on a Sunday in Bridge Street!”

In an article published on the Peterborough Environment City Trusts website a statement from Sustrans reads: “Peterborough is taking positive steps to encourage cycling through the Travelchoice project, but we are worried that this could be undermined by not making adequate allowance for cyclists in and around the City Centre. Bridge Street is at the centre of the cycle network developed for the city and is an important link for hundreds of people who are cycling to work and school each day, or even just popping to the shops.” They point out that when the Development Corporation designed the City Cycle Network and removed car traffic from Bridge Street they[…]

Petition LAUNCHED to oppose Tory plans to BAN cycles from Bridge Street on a Sunday! @SustransPBoro

The Conservative controlled City Council in Peterborough have recently announced they are looking to extend the cycling ban along Bridge Street, in Peterborough City Centre. In their media release the Council talks about protecting pedestrians, with the Cabinet member for City Centre Management, stated that cyclists should “…..dismount and push their bikes along Bridge Street…….” In response, Liberal Democrat, Darren Fower has launched a campaign opposing the idea! Commenting, Liberal Democrat city councillor, Darren Fower, said: “I launched the campaign after being contacted by several local people, who said they could not see any sense in it? Some of them are cyclists, but some are not! “I must admit that,[…]

Tory Cabinet MEMBER criticizes local Newspaper for asking question! @PeterboroughTel

Seemingly NOT content with being on holiday or avoiding one of the most topical Full Council meetings in the past few years, newly elected Tory Cllr Fitzgerald, has now ATTACKED one of the LAST remaining city based local media! The Telegrapgh’s Paul Grinnell, simply trying to ascertain the Tory councillors position on the hot topic of Conservative Leader Marco Cereste, ended up consistently repeating his question, while receiving a barrage of negative tweets from the well paid representative of West Ward – God only knows what the local Conservative club will think!? In a TERRIBLE attempt to sound clever, Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald responded with the answer “with my hand” – when[…]

Tory COUNCILLOR wins WEST WARD by 16 votes, then goes on HOLIDAY!

Despite only beating the LABOUR candidate by a mere 13 votes, Tory “Leggit from North Bretton” councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, headed (just days after the close fought local election) on holiday, instead of attending what some believe to be, one of the most important Annual Council Meetings of the past few years! The Annual Council meeting this month saw an attempt by the the so-called Independent Group (which includes Cllr Fletcher, who once stood up and shouted at Cllr Marco Cereste, “I’m more of a Conservative than you!”) – to put forward a motion calling for a new administration …………. of which the leader would be the councillor who put forward the motion!! Ironically,[…]

Why are local Lib Dems not backing move to remove Marco?

Newly–Elected Leader of Peterborough Liberal Democrats, Cllr Nick Sandford explains: “A lot has been made of the fact that the Conservatives are no longer in majority control of Peterborough City Council. That needs to be reflected in the governance structures which the Council adopts. As Lib Dems have long argued we need a more consensual approach and one in which decisions are made in public and can be challenged at the time they are made and not weeks later. That necessitates in our view the scrapping of the current Leader and Cabinet model and replacement of it with a system of decision making committees. “The Localism Act passed by the Coalition Government gives us that choice and it is one which[…]

Independent Group Leader attempts to separate himself from colleague Cllr Swift’s comments!

It seems that the majority of people in Peterborough are opposed to the Tory controlled City Council’s decision to award significant pay rises to a select few of senior council officers? It also seems that in relation to the issue, there’s now a divide amongst the self titled, Peterborough Independent Forum (PIF) political group on the Council, as their leader, Cllr Harrington, sent out a message to fellow councillors disassociating himself with recent comments made by fellow group member Cllr Swift, during a recent interview on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. You can listen to the interview below! listen to ‘”We ARE in it altogether!” – Cllr Charles Swift’ on Audioboo After[…]

Who will win local #TORY leadership contest + become ‘il Duce’ @ Peterborough City Council?? “VOTE NOW!”

As reported in the Peterborough Telegraph Peterborough City Council leader Marco Cereste faces a challenge to his leadership, from …… no NOT Cllr Fitzgerald (as some expected) nor former leader ousted by Cllr Cereste, Cllr John Peach (as he’s too focused on holding onto Park ward ever since Labour started doing well there) but from his deputy! Who was appointed group deputy leader to Cllr Cereste just four years ago! VOTE now on who YOU think will win – CLICK HERE! One conspiracy theory is that Cllr Cereste, is brighter than Cllr Lee, and intends to take a “holiday” from leadership and the errors associated with his regime at the[…]

Tory leader takes ALL the credit “..the Government …have listened to the lobbying that I have undertaken..” #Governmentfunding

The Tory controlled city council have announced how much money the Government will give them in 2013/14 to run services across the city has been announced. As part of the Local Government Provisional Finance Settlement, the city council will receive over £67 million – nearly £400 per person in the city. The council are quick to note that this sum is £6.5 million less than was received in the current financial year ……… Reacting, Tory leader of Peterborough City Council, Councillor Marco Cereste, was quoted as saying: “That said, the Government appears to have listened to the lobbying that I have undertaken regarding the increasing population in the city, and made some[…]
