Nick Clegg appointed party’s European Union spokesperson

Nick Clegg, has returned to the frontbench to speak on Brexit, knows what he is talking about as a former EU trade negotiator and European Commission official. He has assembled a team of experts and will publish a series of 12 “Brexit Challenge” papers posing the key questions the Government must answer. Clegg wants an informed public debate, and is rightly worried that the key decisions might otherwise depend on “who shouts loudest on the Tory backbenches”. Clegg is not trying to overturn the referendum decision. But he believes Parliament must play a big role in shaping the terms on which we leave the EU, because people did not vote on[…]

LIB DEMS on Tory apprentice plans

Liberal Democrat General Election campaign spokesperson Lord Scriven said: “In Government Vince Cable and the Liberal Democrats have helped businesses create more than two million apprentices and in the next parliament we will go even further. “Left to their own devices the Tories would pay for extra apprenticeships through cuts to housing benefit that would hit 24,000 families with children. “The Tories are reverting to type by giving with one hand and taking away with the other. Only the Liberal Democrats will deliver a stronger economy and fairer society, delivering opportunity for everyone.” The Conservatives plan to pay for extra apprenticeships in part by abolishing housing benefit for out of[…]

New competition to encourage Peterborough students to register to vote @angliaruskinsu

New measures worth £530,000 will be invested in order to encourage students to register to vote, Liberal Democrats in government have revealed. The plan is that the National Union of Students will be allocated funding to run a national competition for student unions to find the best ideas to get students to sign up to the electoral register. The best ideas will receive up to £10,000 to fund events or other projects proposed by student unions across the country. Have YOU read @BoroLibDems Leader @ClrNickSandford’s LATEST comments?

Leader of the Peterborough Liberal Democrat City Council Group, Cllr Nick Sandford writes: It’s not trendy or fashionable at present to be a Liberal Democrat. Our poll ratings are not good. So should be approaching next year’s general and local elections with fear and trepidation? My answer is a clear No in both cases. One advantage in the weeks running up to a General Election is that Lib Dems get something approaching fair coverage and the broadcast media are regulated by strict rules to ensure this. For the rest of the time, the BBC in particular likes to portray everything as a “Two horse race”. For the past four years[…]

Tory policy vacuum stops powers being passed back to people

A radical decentralisation of power to local communities is one possible answer to Peterborough City Council’s mounting budget crisis, says Lib Dem group leader Cllr Nick Sandford. The Council has to make savings of £22 million on its budget next year. The Government is encouraging Councils to give power back to local communities and give them responsibility for local spending decisions. Parish and community councils are not subject to Government budget capping and can raise money for local services through precepts on the Council tax. After attending a meeting (in private) at the Town Hall to discuss budget savings, Nick said: “The Tory administration says they are going to consult[…]

This opportunity cannot be hijacked – @Nick_Clegg

The last few days have provided a once in a generation opportunity to rewire British politics for good, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg writes: Within hours of the momentous decision by the Scottish people to remain in the UK, Westminster found itself once again bogged down in conventional party political point scoring. I have seen for myself the way in which the vested interests in the two old parties can conspire to block reform – scuppering elections to the House of Lords and a clean up of party funding in recent years. We cannot allow an exciting new chapter of empowerment and constitutional renewal to be held hostage[…]

Nick Clegg calls for cycling journeys to be doubled by 2020 @SustransPBoro

Nick Clegg has announced that he wants to see the number of journeys made by bike more than doubled by 2020. Nick is calling for people to submit evidence of ways to help make this happen, which will be followed by a cycling summit to discuss ways in which the Government can help make it cheaper, easier and safer for people to cycle. Cycling currently represents a 2% share of journeys made across the UK and Nick wants people to come forward with ideas about what can be done to encourage more people to get on their bikes.  The creation of cycle highways, bike borrowing schemes and the teaching of[…]

Recovery wouldn’t be happening without the Liberal Democrats in Government!

Commenting, local LIB DEM city councillor, Darren Fower said: “Forming the coalition has provided the country with the stable Government it needs to sort out Labour’s financial mess. Liberal Democrat policies are at the heart of the government’s economic plan that is delivering jobs and growth. “While there is still a lot more to do, we have ensured that growth is back, employment is rising, unemployment is falling and inflation is under control. “The Liberal Democrats are committed to building a stronger economy and a fairer society.” This Budget boosts fairness by: The Liberal Democrats have fought for rises in the amount of money that people can earn before paying[…]
