Good news on lighting and MUGA in #Walton

At the recent meeting of Full Council in the town Hall, Cllr Nick Sandford asked a question on the state of street lighting in Walton. He spoke about the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) in Mountsteven Avenue where the lighting has only just been repaired after a year out of action! Nick also asked the cabinet member responsible what can be done about the lights on and near the Rhubarb Bridge,  many of which had been not working for over three months! Nick said: “Its amazing what asking a question at a public meeting can do. Within days I had several council officers contacting me about the problems.  The MUGA is[…]

A message from the leader of the City Council’s Lib Dem group!

You may have already read the comment of Cllr Nick Sandford, in the Telegraph’s Speakers Corner? If not, here’s what he had to say: This year the city council has been more open in its budget making process. The scale of the problem is huge… £25 million of savings are needed in the next financial year alone. Difficult decisions and choices have to be made. It is still very much a budget of and by the ruling Conservative cabinet and one which reflects their priorities but Opposition councillors have been kept informed at every stage of the budget process. Lib Dems have tried to play a positive role in the[…]

Call for Top Bosses Pay Cut!

Lib Dem Group leader on the City Council, Cllr Nick Sandford, has called on council directors and senior officers at the Council to set an example and show commitment to tackling the Council’s massive budget deficit by taking a cut in their own pay. At a meeting of the latest Employment Committee, Nick asked the committee to request all officers earning over £100,000 a year to accept an immediate 15% cut in their salary. The meeting was called after a public outcry following a secret meeting of the committee back in February which pushed through increases in pay of up to to 25% for some senior officers, allegedly justified by them[…]

Have YOU read @BoroLibDems Leader @ClrNickSandford’s LATEST comments?

Leader of the Peterborough Liberal Democrat City Council Group, Cllr Nick Sandford writes: It’s not trendy or fashionable at present to be a Liberal Democrat. Our poll ratings are not good. So should be approaching next year’s general and local elections with fear and trepidation? My answer is a clear No in both cases. One advantage in the weeks running up to a General Election is that Lib Dems get something approaching fair coverage and the broadcast media are regulated by strict rules to ensure this. For the rest of the time, the BBC in particular likes to portray everything as a “Two horse race”. For the past four years[…]

Tory policy vacuum stops powers being passed back to people

A radical decentralisation of power to local communities is one possible answer to Peterborough City Council’s mounting budget crisis, says Lib Dem group leader Cllr Nick Sandford. The Council has to make savings of £22 million on its budget next year. The Government is encouraging Councils to give power back to local communities and give them responsibility for local spending decisions. Parish and community councils are not subject to Government budget capping and can raise money for local services through precepts on the Council tax. After attending a meeting (in private) at the Town Hall to discuss budget savings, Nick said: “The Tory administration says they are going to consult[…]

Pay rise development “…will prove to be entirely cosmetic.”

The latest reports in the local media that claim that the Tory controlled City Council have indicated that the issue of the controversial decision of theirs, to award MASSIVE pay rises to a select few of senior council officers, could be subjected to a review in the near future, has been described by Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Nick Sandford as “entirely cosmetic.” Nick went on to say, “It will not result in a reduction in anyone’s salary. These salary increases are absolutely appalling in the current economic times.” Listen to Nick’s interview on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire by simply pressing the play button below! listen to ‘Lib Dems WALK-OUT in PAY RISE[…]

Did local LIB DEMS support “massive” pay rises for senior City Council management??? @ClrNickSandford

As reported in the local media, a “…decision to award five-figure salary rises to some of Peterborough City Council’s top earners – as they slash budgets and cut back services – has come under fire.” Speaking to the Telegraph, LIB DEM group Leader on the City Council, Cllr Nick Sandford, said: “I am appalled by this. It sends out completely the wrong message about where the council’s priorities are, as they make cuts to a number of services, and other council employees are only getting a one per cent pay increase.” Listen to Nick Sandford’s interview on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire below! listen to ‘Cllr Nick Sandford talks about Council Officer[…]

Lib Dem councillors oppose Tory controlled Council’s budget plans!

At the latest budget meeting at the Town Hall, Lib Dem council group leader, Nick Sandford,  said his party have consistently opposed the Tory plans to close (or “redesignate”) children’s centres. Lib Dems have  consistently supported moves to review the policy and look at alternatives. “We think this Tory policy shows they have the wrong priorities and are making the wrong choices,” Nick said.  “They would rather handover £2.2 million to their contractor Amey for grass and tree cutting, rather than spend half of that on keeping children’s centres open.  We are paying over £100,000 a year to some senior officers and big special responsibility payments to cabinet members but they[…]

Fane Road tree cuts

Last year, the council put new street lights in Fane Road. The Walton FOCUS Team received complaints about the positioning of a few of the lights and it was pointed out that some were being put very close to trees. The guys in Walton predicted at the time that this would cause problems and now it has. Council contractor Enterprise wants to cut back some of the trees ….. to improve the lighting. Local Lib Dem councillor Nick Sandford said: “We are long overdue a proper survey of the trees in Fane Road and some pruning work is probably needed. “But to put lights so close to trees shows a[…]

76,300 people in Peterborough have their income tax bill CUT by £600 a year!

Amidst all the doom and gloom about benefit changes, you might be interested to know that from NOW, 76,300 people (i.e. all basic rate tax payers) in Peterborough will see a cut in their income tax bill of £600 a year or £50 each month! Commenting, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on the City Council, Nick Sandford, said: “Since 2010, 6220 people in Peterborough who were previously paying income tax, now pay nothing at all! The total savings in income tax for Peterborough people since the 2010 election have been a staggering £45,780,000. “This has all happened through implementation of the pledges in the Lib Dem manifesto by the Coalition Government. Nick Clegg said that by 2015,[…]
