Improving where we live…….

We are often critical of the Tory council and residents sometimes ask what the Lib Dems would do differently if we were running the city council. So what would we do? We would introduce more ‘community ownership’, for example helping local groups to adopt the bowling greens which the council last year threatened to close. We would devolve power to local communities to do things like introduce 20 mph speed limits, fine people who park on grass verges (and plant trees to stop cars getting onto verges in the first place) and clear rubbish from the streets. We would auction licences for alcohol stores and houses where rooms are let to different individuals, instead of just giving the licences[…]

In the new ward that is officially be known as ‘Gunthorpe’ the three council seats will be contested by existing councillors Darren Fower and Julia Davidson together with FOCUS co-ordinator Andrew Bond. Local resident and Liberal Democrat FOCUS Deliverer, Mike Holland said: “We have picked a winning team that has already established an excellent reputation with local people. Darren and Julia are long-standing councillors who have proved that they are effective campaigners on behalf of the area and its residents. “Andrew has been working, often ‘behind the scenes’, to support them and all three will[…]

Peterborough needs an integrated transport policy

“We need a city council that has higher ambitions for our city than just a ‘dormitory with warehouses’ and part of that must be to improve all our transport links” says Peterborough Liberal Democrat vice chairman Peter Chivall in a recent article in the Peterborough Telegraph. Local Liberal Democrats support many aspects of the strategic economic plan published earlier this year by the  Local Enterprise Partnership. The transport section of that plan included promotion of roads improvements but it gave equal weight to the need to improve our rail links, both on the East Coast Main line and cross country to Ely, Ipswich and Cambridge. In the context of ‘expansion beyond Cambridge of[…]

Energy investment good for Peterborough

As Peterborough Lib Dems continue to push the Tory council to meet the city’s stated ambition to be the UK’s ‘environment capital’, the Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change has published the government’s first ever Energy Investment Report. Ed Davey MP says the report shows how Liberal Democrats in government have delivered on jobs and investment in energy – particularly green energy – and shows the plan we now have for this to continue for decades to come. The sheer scale of the investment has already been huge: between 2010 and 2013 we’ve secured £45 billion of investment in electricity generation and networks alone. The UK’s[…]

Watch local Lib Dem group leaders explain why they opposed Cereste “coup” at Council

At the latest Annual Council meeting, an attempt was made by Cllr David Harrington (Indp, Newborough) and leader of the Peterborough Independent Forum (which now includes 3 UKIP councillors) to oust Tory leader Cllr Cereste, through a formal motion to the Council at the town hall. The best bit was, the intention to replace Cllr Cereste with ………… himself! The attempt FAILED with 32 councillors voting against the motion, 14 supporting it and 10 abstained from voting. ALL four Lib Dem city councillors voted against the motion! You can watch what Cllr Nick Sandford, group leader of the Peterborough Liberal Democrats council group, had to say on the matter by[…]

Why are local Lib Dems not backing move to remove Marco?

Newly–Elected Leader of Peterborough Liberal Democrats, Cllr Nick Sandford explains: “A lot has been made of the fact that the Conservatives are no longer in majority control of Peterborough City Council. That needs to be reflected in the governance structures which the Council adopts. As Lib Dems have long argued we need a more consensual approach and one in which decisions are made in public and can be challenged at the time they are made and not weeks later. That necessitates in our view the scrapping of the current Leader and Cabinet model and replacement of it with a system of decision making committees. “The Localism Act passed by the Coalition Government gives us that choice and it is one which[…]

In the @BoroLibDems we do things a little differently… @LibDems

At this time of year, you can get a lot of knocks on your door from party election canvassers. In the Peterborough Liberal Democrats we do things a little differently… we have this radical idea that councillors should keep in touch with people all the year round and not just at election time. We deliver Focus newsletters about once every six weeks and also seek people’s views through residents’ surveys. In recent weeks, there seem to have been two things on the minds of many residents: FIRSTLY: The Tory Brown Bin Tax, which is being introduced in around 30 days’ time and will involve people being forced to pay nearly[…]
