Government spending on schools is set to drop for the first time since the 1990’s

The  Institute for Fiscal Studies say that schools funding has been well protected for the last two decades but this is set to drop by 6.5% in real terms over the course of this parliament. The National Governors’ Association said that the money being provided by Government simply isn’t enough to educate our children. “The Department for Education unfortunately doesn’t know how much it costs to educate a pupil whether it be a primary or secondary pupil,” Emma Knights, the association’s chief executive, on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. This is putting further strain on hard working teachers and in some cases is prompting them to leave the profession out[…]

Bonus for buses at Council budget meeting

New bus services could be running in Peterborough as early as October, following a successful budget amendment moved by Lib Dem Councillors on Peterborough City Council, at the latest budget meeting of Full Council. A cross party working group is to be set up to look at areas of the city which don’t have adequate bus services, following a cut in bus subsidy by over 50% by the Tory administration two years ago. If the working group’s recommendations are agreed, up to £75,000 could be allocated from council contingency reserves to pay for the new services. Also in the budget, Lib Dem intervention helped to stop a barmy proposal by[…]

Cereste cycling PR stunt backfires!

A report in the Peterborough Telegraph has shown how a PR stunt does not always resolve an issue! The article reported how Tory Council leader, Marco Cereste, who introduced the cycle ban extension along Bridge Street, despite clear opposition by local people and cycling organisations, had held a discussion on Twitter with a local cyclist about cycling in the city centre and then arranged a “fact-finding” city cycle ride with council officers. But after the stunt, the resident/cyclist himself was reported as saying: “The city is poor for cycling and it takes a lot to change attitudes. I think I got across that the kind of language Cllr Cereste uses is not helpful in[…]

Cllr Lee represents Fletton and Woodston

What do residents of #Fletton and #Woodston think of it?

It looks like another sitting Tory is set to jump ship from the Cereste regime at Peterborough Town Hall? We already know for certain that Tory councillor for Paston, Sue Day, will not be standing and we’ve heard several others are also set to side step the opportunity to “defend their records!” The latest is former Deputy Leader of the Conservative group, Cllr Matthew Lee! Q: How do we know? A: Well despite STILL being a city councillor until May 2015 for the Fletton and Woodston ward, Cllr Lee recently stood for election to the Stamford North seat, but was defeated by the UKIP candidate! Now baring in mind that between now[…]

Have YOU read @BoroLibDems Leader @ClrNickSandford’s LATEST comments?

Leader of the Peterborough Liberal Democrat City Council Group, Cllr Nick Sandford writes: It’s not trendy or fashionable at present to be a Liberal Democrat. Our poll ratings are not good. So should be approaching next year’s general and local elections with fear and trepidation? My answer is a clear No in both cases. One advantage in the weeks running up to a General Election is that Lib Dems get something approaching fair coverage and the broadcast media are regulated by strict rules to ensure this. For the rest of the time, the BBC in particular likes to portray everything as a “Two horse race”. For the past four years[…]

Could UKIP candidate determine Park Ward election in 2015?

Park Ward, in recent years has become something of a battleground, and one of the results many involved in the local political scene look out for. For many years, Park ward, a place where the city MP’s ‘local’ property is situated, was considered a safe Tory seat, boasting all three city councillor roles being held by Conservatives. Then in 2011, Labour successfully turned the table and took a seat, with the Tories taking second spot. In 2012, they came second again, but in 2014, when UKIP fielded a candidate, Labour took their second seat for the area. Given the closeness in recent years, the question now is what impact will[…]

Tory policy vacuum stops powers being passed back to people

A radical decentralisation of power to local communities is one possible answer to Peterborough City Council’s mounting budget crisis, says Lib Dem group leader Cllr Nick Sandford. The Council has to make savings of £22 million on its budget next year. The Government is encouraging Councils to give power back to local communities and give them responsibility for local spending decisions. Parish and community councils are not subject to Government budget capping and can raise money for local services through precepts on the Council tax. After attending a meeting (in private) at the Town Hall to discuss budget savings, Nick said: “The Tory administration says they are going to consult[…]

Planned incinerator being built in Fengate "Out of date”

That’s the view of Peterborough Friends of the Earth.  Speaking on BBC Radio Cambs, Richard Olive said: “It’s a very inefficient process to start with. Nearby to the new incinerator is the existing power station. That produces electricity at 48% efficiency, but the Energy from Waste facility (aka incinerator) will only have an efficiency 27% and of course, the green aspects, it is still burning fossil fuels!” NOW listen to the Tory Cabinet member for Street scene, Waste management and Communications, respond to the claim by pressing the play button below! listen to ‘”I’m not a scientist” says Tory Cabinet member for Waste Management!’ on Audioboo

Tory Cabinet MEMBER criticizes local Newspaper for asking question! @PeterboroughTel

Seemingly NOT content with being on holiday or avoiding one of the most topical Full Council meetings in the past few years, newly elected Tory Cllr Fitzgerald, has now ATTACKED one of the LAST remaining city based local media! The Telegrapgh’s Paul Grinnell, simply trying to ascertain the Tory councillors position on the hot topic of Conservative Leader Marco Cereste, ended up consistently repeating his question, while receiving a barrage of negative tweets from the well paid representative of West Ward – God only knows what the local Conservative club will think!? In a TERRIBLE attempt to sound clever, Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald responded with the answer “with my hand” – when[…]

Tory COUNCILLOR wins WEST WARD by 16 votes, then goes on HOLIDAY!

Despite only beating the LABOUR candidate by a mere 13 votes, Tory “Leggit from North Bretton” councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, headed (just days after the close fought local election) on holiday, instead of attending what some believe to be, one of the most important Annual Council Meetings of the past few years! The Annual Council meeting this month saw an attempt by the the so-called Independent Group (which includes Cllr Fletcher, who once stood up and shouted at Cllr Marco Cereste, “I’m more of a Conservative than you!”) – to put forward a motion calling for a new administration …………. of which the leader would be the councillor who put forward the motion!! Ironically,[…]
