Local Lib Dems will stand up for EU nationals in Peterborough!

It is important to remember that the EU was created to end centuries of war in Europe and bring prosperity to all European countries …. of course, there is still much work to do! It is becoming ever more clear that Theresa May is willing to scrap a free trade deal with the rest of Europe in order to pander to UKIP and the far-right of her own party. Nobody knows what Brexit will look like. The choices Theresa May will make will affect Peterborough and our country for decades – that’s your job, your weekly shop, your environment, your safety, where you can travel to and where you can[…]

What do residents of #Fletton and #Woodston think of it?

It looks like another sitting Tory is set to jump ship from the Cereste regime at Peterborough Town Hall? A: Well despite STILL being a city councillor until May 2015 for the Fletton and Woodston ward, Cllr Lee recently stood for election to the Stamford North seat, but was defeated by the UKIP candidate! Now baring in mind that between now[…]

UKIP add Peterborough as target seat for May 2015 General Election

Should Peterborough Tories be worried? Following the UK Independence party securing their second MP in Rochester and Strood, reports suggest that they now have their sights on our city? Over the last few decades, Peterborough has swung, between Labour and the Conservatives, when it comes to electing their Member for Parliament, so could there really be a change? After the latest by-election, Peterborough’s present Tory MP, “Smiley” Jackson tweeted that Mark Reckless would be “gone in May” and earlier tweeted: “Any Tory MP who defects to Ukip on the basis of the result in Rochester and Strood (whatever it is) would frankly be completely insane.” Asked about Jackson’s tweet, Farage[…]

Could UKIP candidate determine Park Ward election in 2015?

Park Ward, in recent years has become something of a battleground, and one of the results many involved in the local political scene look out for. For many years, Park ward, a place where the city MP’s ‘local’ property is situated, was considered a safe Tory seat, boasting all three city councillor roles being held by Conservatives. Then in 2011, Labour successfully turned the table and took a seat, with the Tories taking second spot. In 2012, they came second again, but in 2014, when UKIP fielded a candidate, Labour took their second seat for the area. Given the closeness in recent years, the question now is what impact will[…]

Latvian lady creates major setback for UKIP in EU Parliament

It would seem something of a political seesaw has occurred, with UKIP announcing daily they’re the saviours of British politics, yet in Europe, they been dealt a bit of a blow! Constitutionally political groupings in Brussels need to have at least 25 MEP’s from 7 countries to be formally recognised as a political group! So for example, the European Conservatives and Reformist Group aka ECR, includes the Conservative Party. But the group that UKIP are a member of, The Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group – EFDD, has been dealt a major blow, after Latvian Farmers Union MEP, Iveta Grigule, announced she had resigned from the group. The dissolution[…]

City’s Tory MP …. upsets new UKIP MP!

There’s a well known quote in politics, that reminds individuals, that it’s better to be thought of a a fool, than open your mouth and confirm it! Once again, we think the Tory MP for Peterborough, might want to take that on board! .@SJacksonMP Stewart, go tribal on me in the weeks ahead if you want. your call. I will simply spend more time campaigning in Peterborough — Douglas Carswell MP (@DouglasCarswell) October 12, 2014 So, at a time when some might think our city’s MP would be trying to prevent UKIP standing in the general election, in order to prevent splitting the local right wing vote, Smiley Jackson is[…]

This opportunity cannot be hijacked – @Nick_Clegg

The last few days have provided a once in a generation opportunity to rewire British politics for good, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg writes: Within hours of the momentous decision by the Scottish people to remain in the UK, Westminster found itself once again bogged down in conventional party political point scoring. I have seen for myself the way in which the vested interests in the two old parties can conspire to block reform – scuppering elections to the House of Lords and a clean up of party funding in recent years. We cannot allow an exciting new chapter of empowerment and constitutional renewal to be held hostage[…]

More done in last 5 than previous 40 years! Claims Cereste!

Did you get to hear the interview with Cllr Marco Cereste on BBC Radio Cambs directly after the 2014 local election results? It was certainly interesting, as he admitted to speaking with certain “other” councillors about enabling him to maintain his position as leader of the City Council – but which opposition councillors? – CERTAINLY none of the Lib Dems! He also went on to make one of his classic claims, stating “Me, as leader of the Council, have done more in the last 5 years in our city then has happened in the last 40 years in our city!” – Doesn’t say much for the 5+ years prior to his[…]

Watch local Lib Dem group leaders explain why they opposed Cereste “coup” at Council

At the latest Annual Council meeting, an attempt was made by Cllr David Harrington (Indp, Newborough) and leader of the Peterborough Independent Forum (which now includes 3 UKIP councillors) to oust Tory leader Cllr Cereste, through a formal motion to the Council at the town hall. The best bit was, the intention to replace Cllr Cereste with ………… himself! The attempt FAILED with 32 councillors voting against the motion, 14 supporting it and 10 abstained from voting. ALL four Lib Dem city councillors voted against the motion! You can watch what Cllr Nick Sandford, group leader of the Peterborough Liberal Democrats council group, had to say on the matter by[…]
