#Walton bus shelter news ………….

In response to a recent article in the Walton FOCUS Team newsletter about people wanting a bus sheter in Corfe avenue, Cllr Asif Shaheed and Cllr Nick Sandford, have now received an email from someone near the proposed location who is very opposed to the idea, on the grounds that it might attract young people to hang around and cause trouble. Nick has been told there will be a public consultation on the issue later this year before any decision is made. If you have any views, please respond to the consultation but also it would be good if you could also give your views to Nick or Asif. The Walton FOCUS[…]

Cross ward concern for planned housing development on #GunthorpeRoad

Lib Dem ward councillor for both Walton and Werrington South, have been contacted about a planning application for several new houses to be built on a small piece of overgrown land at the bottom end of Gunthorpe Road, near the Brookside Methodist Church. It is early days and apparently the site has not yet been assessed by planning officers but Cllr Nick Sandford, has asked for it to be referred to the Planning Committee. This means that the application will be debated in public and determined by councillors, and not planning officers. Nick commented after looking at the plans: “Residents tell me this site is very boggy at certain times[…]

Good news on lighting and MUGA in #Walton

At the recent meeting of Full Council in the town Hall, Cllr Nick Sandford asked a question on the state of street lighting in Walton. He spoke about the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) in Mountsteven Avenue where the lighting has only just been repaired after a year out of action! Nick also asked the cabinet member responsible what can be done about the lights on and near the Rhubarb Bridge,  many of which had been not working for over three months! Nick said: “Its amazing what asking a question at a public meeting can do. Within days I had several council officers contacting me about the problems.  The MUGA is[…]

LATEST North East Urban Safer, Stronger Neighbourhoods meeting @PboroCops

The latest North East Urban Safer, Stronger Neighbourhoods meeting took place on the 8th July, and was held at Paston Ridings Primary School. The meeting was poorly attended, with just 7 local residents in attendance, from an area population in excess of 24,000, which equates to just 0.02% of local residents! It was also noted that out of a possible 11 City Councillors covering Gunthorpe, Paston, Werrington and Walton, just 3 city councillors attended. Several issues were discussed, including: Anti-social behaviour at the Werrington skate park Anti-social behaviour at Werrington Centre Problems with motor cycles driving on footpaths Graffiti increase in and around Werrington Meadow Liberal Democrat city councillor for[…]

Well done to ALL our candidates! Here’s our election digest ……..

There’s a lot of talk in the media about UKIP after the 2014 local elections in Peterborough, after they managed to get 3 councillors elected.  BUT, you might like to know that the we managed to get two city councillors elected and also stood in several other wards around the city. We received a total of 2396 votes from people in Peterborough. The average vote received by Liberal Democrat candidates was 400 votes. Walton Liberal Democrat councillor joins 20mph limit group!

Walton Liberal Democrat councillor Asif Shaheed is now part of a council group looking at introducing 20 mph speed limits across Peterborough’s residential areas. Ironically, three days prior to the first meeting, Asif became the victim of a “hit and run” incident when his car was hit while parked outside his house. The guilty driver did not stop and leave his details. “This incident only increases my ambition that the group should be successful in our quest. “There could have been someone crossing the road and the outcome could have been much more serious due to a driver’s lack of attention and care. And to not stop and admit their[…]

Fane Road tree cuts

Last year, the council put new street lights in Fane Road. The Walton FOCUS Team received complaints about the positioning of a few of the lights and it was pointed out that some were being put very close to trees. The guys in Walton predicted at the time that this would cause problems and now it has. Council contractor Enterprise wants to cut back some of the trees ….. to improve the lighting. Local Lib Dem councillor Nick Sandford said: “We are long overdue a proper survey of the trees in Fane Road and some pruning work is probably needed. “But to put lights so close to trees shows a[…]

Maps for Peterborough Polling Cards

With such low turnouts for this years local elections in Peterborough, Lib Dem City Councillor, Darren Fower has put forward the idea of including a map on future City Council polling cards. Lib Dem FOCUS Team councillor for South Werrington and North Gunthorpe, Darren Fower, said: “Turnout for South Werrington & North Gunthorpe was again one of the highest in the city, but when you see Orton with Hampton’s turnout was a mere 18%, its a bit of a joke and something needs to be done by the Council to address this. “Personally, I would like to see some radical incentives like a 5% discounts on Council Tax for people[…]

How Costly Was Park Ward for the Tories?

Ahead of this years local elections, Tories were said to be fretting over the safety of former Council Leader, John Peach’s Park Ward seat, as he faced competition from Labour, who last year secured a surprised victory in this area! One muttering a lot of our guys and girls heard from Tory candidates during Thursday 3rd May elections, was that they were not receiving any support, giving the impression that resources and activists were being concentrated on the Park Ward area, leaving wards like Walton, North Werrington, South Werrington & North Gunthorpe and Paston Tories to……. actually have to manage their own campaigns! #SHOCK HORROR! Left to their own devices[…]
